Auditorium Kunstmuseum Bonn
Talk

Since the emergence of video art in the 1960s, artists have been using the medium of video to confront the oppression of people and their diversity in subversive, resistant and resilient ways. Many works of the VIDEONALE.20 address the social, political and ecological conditions to which human and non-human subjects are involuntarily exposed and how different subjects can withstand those conditions. The medium of video becomes an instrument of exposure, preservation, and world building and thus itself an expression of resilience. In three discussion rounds, VIDEONALE.20 artists will talk about the phenomenon of resilience in their work.

Ticket Opening Day 1 required.

Marcel Odenbach / YAN Wai Yin / Kathrin Jentjens
STÄNDIG AUF DEM SPRUNG SEIN (Marcel Odenbach) and MUTED BRIDGES (YAN Wai Yin) address the consequences of authoritarian systems that lead to migration and silencing. In a collage of found footage and newly-produced sequences, Odenbach paints a picture of (forced) departure and people being on the move. In a seemingly diary-like video documentary, YAN Wai Yin indirectly preserves the 2019/20 protest movement in Hong Kong against China's influence.

Philipp Gufler / Kat Lawinia Gorska
A jet of water is aimed at the heart region of a naked body that stands firm: In THE BEGINNING OF IDENTIFICATION, AND ITS END, Philipp Gufler uses historical footage and staged moving images to explore the successful emancipation history of gender diversity and the visibility of queer bodies, which he contrasts with contemporary homonationalism and its appropriation of LGBTIQ emancipation demands for the sake of anti-Muslim racism and exclusion.

Ana María Millán / Nieves de la Fuente Gutiérrez
In her work, Ana María Millán addresses the exploitation of resources and its impact on the ecosystem. In DESERT (Ana María Millán) – a hybrid between computer simulation and video game – players move from the mining mines near Calí, Colombia, to a barren desert covered in oil and begin to immerse themselves in the matter. In a conversation between the artist and curator Nieves de la Fuente Gutiérrez, Ana María Millán talks about the potential of gaming as a critical and subversive tool for world building.

Reading Session and Talk
With Beatrice Gibson and Stéphanie Lagarde

In their video works, Beatrice Gibson and Stéphanie Lagarde explore the themes of parenthood and self-abandonment. We will approach the works of Lagarde and Gibson through subsequent screenings and discussions.

Talk
With Anna Zett and Agathe Israel

In her film ES GIBT KEINE ANGST [Afraid doesn't exist], Anna Zett gives insights into the period of upheaval in Germany between 1986 and 1990: the political and social change from the German Democratic Republic to reunification with the Federal Republic of Germany. By interweaving GDR opposition material with poetry and music, the artist addresses the fears and uncertainties of this particular period of change. In conversation with psychoanalyst Agathe Israel, we talk about the psychological dimension of those years and how fear and repression shaped the collective and individual experience of reunification.

Listening Session and Talk
With Chto Delat

In the video performance NEZHNOST / TENDERNESS by the collective Chto Delat, four people sway in front of their screens to the rhythm of the Soviet song Nezhnost, which describes the loneliness of the first cosmonaut in space. Created at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work responds to the threat of social collapse and invites us to imagine how we would behave if the collapse had already occurred. Together with the collective, we approach their video work by closely listening to Nezhnost's melody and lyrics.

In ANIMA OVERDRIVE by Stefan Panhans and Andrea Winkler, a performer raps about the exhaustive cycle of deliveries, from physical goods to abstract concepts. In MEMBRANE OF THE NEW, Ida Kammerloch tells the story of her grandfather's shuttle trade between Russia and China. INTRODUCTION BY MARYNA MAKARENKO TO ›WHEN YOU WHISTLE, IT MAKES AIR COME OUT‹

Singing, breatharianism or nervous system regulation: the performance and video artist Maryna Makarenko repeatedly deals with breathing in her work. In her INTRODUCTION, breathing becomes a means of approaching Ana Torfs' video work WHEN YOU WHISTLE, IT MAKES AIR COME OUT. Torfs' installation, whose rhythm is determined by the sound of the artist’s breath, is based on the Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget’s studies of children's ideas of cause and effect. The children's surprising answers to questions such as »Where does the wind come from?« appear as lettering in an old light box.

»I deliver eggplants. I deliver liver. Whether apples or fantasies: everything seems to be orderable, deliverable and consumable at any time. But at what price for a society whose economic system turns almost everything into goods that can be delivered at the click of a mouse? Panhans & Winkler address the state of impending exhaustion of the “anima” (soul) due to excessive stress (overdrive).

On this evening we will be showing ANIMA OVERDRIVE (in English with separate subtitles) on various monitors on the 12th floor of the Post Tower in Bonn, the headquarters of the logistics group Deutsche Post. Stefan Panhans & Andrea Winkler will be present on the evening.

STUDENTS FROM ART ACADEMIES PRESENT THEIR WORKS

The Schaumburg is a former workshop hall in Bonn's Nordstadt district that is used as an exhibition and event venue. Its name is borrowed from the Palais Schaumburg of the same name in the government district of the former federal capital Bonn; a 19th century city villa that was the first official residence of the Federal Chancellery from 1949 to 1976. On May 9 and 10, the Schaumburg will be transformed into a cinema hall in which students from the classes of Prof. Nina Fischer (Berlin University of the Arts), Prof. Ute Hörner (Academy of Media Arts, Cologne), Prof. Tessa Knapp (Alanus University, Alfter) and Prof. Clemens von Wedemeyer (Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig) will project their works into the room.
