Future Perfect Continuous. At first, we only hear: noises reminiscent of falling rain. Then we also see: close-up views of the hands, gestures and faces that cause these noises. In a concentrated cooperation of the action and reaction of individual performers, the gestures intensify to a storm, which abates again after a brief time. Only then do we see the group of young people, the body of sound arranged in a loose circle, surrounded by a rough architecture in a state of transition.
Angelica Mesiti’s installation is inspired by a game played to bring children into contact with one another in new constellations, to make them aware of one another and help develop a feeling for the group. Instead of children, however, here it is young adults who perform a weather event with the help of simple gestures like clapping, snapping their fingers and rubbing; people who will have to live with the changing climate and who at the same time have the possibility to shape the future with their (electoral) decisions. What does it change for them when they are part of this choreography of a weather event? To themselves, and together with others, create something in the here and now that is normally not under our control. Something that was, as also suggested by the black and white images, long before us—›Perfect‹, and will always be—›Continuous‹, and in the changing of which we are nonetheless so tangibly involved—›Future‹.
Mesiti’s work translates temporal dimensions and abstract contexts into the space, involves us as viewers both through the spatial presence of the sound and through proximity with the bodies performing this sound. We take an interest in this collective act of making weather and can only resist its effects and impact with difficulty. Future Perfect Continuous. (Tasja Langenbach)
