April 11 to May 18, 2025 | The prologue starts on 16.11.2024
In the VIDEONALE.20 PROLOGUE, you can encounter video artworks from V.20 at various locations in Bonn even before the start of the festival (April 11–May 18, 2025, opening: April 10, 2025) from November 16, 2024 to March 13, 2025.
On each of the six evenings, a work from V.20 will be shown and discussed in depth. Would you like to take part in one of the video evenings? Participation in the video evenings is free of charge, registration is required by contacting Annette Ziegert, ziegert@videonale.org. The number of participants is limited.
On Thursday, April 10, 2025, the VIDEONALE.20 will be officially opened at Kunstmuseum Bonn at 19:00. On this evening, from 18:00–24:00, you will have the first opportunity to see the exhibition at Kunstmuseum Bonn with 20 video artworks and installations from VIDEONALE.20. From Friday, April 11, 11:00, the parcours stations with six more works will open in the city and invite you to stroll around.
The program of the opening days unfolds from Friday, 11 April to Sunday, 13 April. Information on registration can be found behind the individual program items. The Videonale exhibition at Kunstmuseum Bonn and the stations in the city can be visited on the opening days independently of the festival program.

The fourth VIDEO EVENING takes us to the Mineralogical Museum in Poppelsdorf Palace. The museum is one of the oldest natural history museums in the Rhineland. The exhibition rooms with over 6.000 minerals, meteorites and gemstones resemble a cabinet of curiosities. Among the exhibits is uranium ore. The mining of uranium in Thuringia and Saxony during the GDR era is the subject of the video “Sonne unter Tage” by Mareike Bernien and Alex Gerbaulet, which we will be showing in the museum on this evening.
Participation in the video evening is free of charge. Registration is required with Annette Ziegert: ziegert@videonale.org. The number of participants for the video evening is limited.

A WORKSHOP for younger and older lesbian women – as part of the exhibition project I AM THE FIRST LESBIAN I EVER MET
Videonale is organizing a workshop led by artist Evamaria Schaller on February 1, 2025 from 13:00–18:00, which is aimed at younger and older lesbian women. In the workshop, we will explore together through touch and movement in space how connections and relationships arise; between us and objects that mean something to us, to ourselves and to other women in the room. Please bring an object that you associate with yourself/your lesbian identity.
Location: Atelier Flow, Georgstr. 26A, Bonn
Participation is free of charge, the number of participants is limited. Registration with Theresa Samimizad: samimizad@videonale.org
The workshop results will be documented on video. A part of it can (if desired and after approval) be included in the exhibition of the project I AM THE FIRST LESBIAN I EVER MET in the Bonn exhibition space Flow. The exhibition project will take place as part of VIDEONALE.20 (11.4.–18.5.2025, Kunstmuseum Bonn and at locations in the city). The project focuses on the visibility of (older) lesbian women in public space, lesbian identity and community. The starting point of the exhibition project is the video work I AM THE FIRST LESBIAN I EVER MET by Dani and Sheilah ReStack, which was created in collaboration with women from Bonn.
The exhibition project is supported by Fonds Kulturelle Bildung im Alter, Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia

A seemingly everyday situation that turns out to be unusual: a woman and a man find themselves sleeping and dreamwalking in their apartment while their children play at their feet between moving boxes. They discover a snake on the floor. Made at the time of Beatrice Gibson and her family's move from London to Palermo in 2021, this experimental film provides an insight into a seemingly everyday situation while at the same time creating a dream space that explores how people deal with unplanned, uncontrollable events.
Participation in the video evening is free of charge. Registration is required with Annette Ziegert: ziegert@videonale.org. The number of participants for the video evening is limited.

The sixth VIDEO EVENING with a sneak preview of VIDEONALE.20 will take place in the exhibition “Mother” at Galerie Clement: A video artist becomes a mother. In image comparisons with natural phenomena, she approaches the profound changes she experiences as a person and artist. A time of disorder and reorganization, in which she has the impression that she can no longer find her way back to herself. The desire for intense life experiences gives way to an irrepressible longing to simply be allowed to sleep. The state childcare system promises relief. But what understanding of care and framework conditions for individual development underlies the way in which the state organizes childcare? Together with other women, she calls for alternatives.
Participation in the video evening is free of charge. Registration is required with Annette Ziegert: ziegert@videonale.org. The number of participants for the video evening is limited.

Since the emergence of video art in the 1960s, artists have persistently used the medium of video to counter the oppression of people and their diversity with artistic means that are subversive, resistant and resilient and critical of power. The social, political and ecological influences to which human and non-human subjects are involuntarily exposed and how they withstand them is the subject of many works at VIDEONALE.20. The medium of video becomes an instrument of uncovering, preserving, but also of world creation and thus itself an expression of resilience. In three discussion rounds, V.20 artists will talk about the phenomenon of resilience in their work.
Marcel Odenbach / YAN Wai Yin
STÄNDIG AUF DEM SPRUNG SEIN (Marcel Odenbach) and MUTED BRIDGES (YAN Wai Yin) address the consequences of authoritarian systems that lead to migration or silencing. In a collage of produced and found sequences, Odenbach deals with the phenomenon of (forced) departure and being on the move. In a seemingly diary-like video documentary, YAN Wai Yin indirectly preserves the 2019/2020 protest movement in Hong Kong against China's influence.
Philipp Gufler / Kat Lawinia Gorska
A jet of water is aimed at the heart area of a naked body that stands firm: In THE BEGINNING OF IDENTIFICATION, AND ITS END, Philipp Gufler uses historical footage and staged moving images to explore the successful history of emancipation of gender diversity and the visibility of queer bodies, which he contrasts with contemporary homonationalism and its appropriation of LGBTIQ emancipation demands for anti-Muslim racism and exclusion.
Ana María Millán / Nieves de la Fuente Gutiérrez
In her work, Ana María Millán deals with the exploitation of resources and their impact on the ecosystem. In DESERT (Ana María Millán) - a combination of computer simulation and video game - players travel from the mining mines near Cali, Colombia, to a barren desert covered in oil and begin to immerse themselves in the oil. In conversation with artist and curator Nieves de la Fuente Gutiérrez, she talks about the potential of gaming as a power-critical tool for creating worlds.

With Anna Zett and Agathe Israel
Talk
In her film ES GIBT KEINE ANGST [Afraid doesn't exist], Anna Zett provides insights into the period of upheaval in Germany between 1986 and 1990: the political and social change from the GDR (German Democratic Republic) to reunification with the Federal Republic of Germany. By interweaving GDR opposition material with poetry and music, the artist addresses the fears and uncertainties of the period of change. In conversation with the psychoanalyst Agathe Israel, we talk about the psychological dimension of these years and how fear and repression shaped the collective and individual experience of reunification.

With Chto Delat
Listening Session and Talk
In the video performance NEZHNOST / TENDERNESS by the collective Chto Delat, four people sway in front of their screens to the rhythm of the Soviet song Neznost, which describes the loneliness of the first cosmonaut in space. Created at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the work responds to the threat of social collapse and invites us to imagine how we would behave if the collapse had already occurred. Together with the collective, we approach the work using the melody and lyrics of Neznost.

With Ida Kammerloch and Stefan Panhans / Andrea Winkler
Reading Session and Talk
In ANIMA OVERDRIVE by Stefan Panhans and Andrea Winkler, a performer raps about the exhaustive cycle of deliveries, from physical goods to abstract concepts. In MEMBRANE OF THE NEW / AREN'T YOU AFRAID TO SWING ON RUSSIAN SWINGS, Ida Kammerloch tells the story of the shuttle trade between Russia and China based on the story of her grandfather. In a participatory reading, the two works are brought into resonance with text excerpts from Heike Geissler's novel Seasonal Associate, in which the author writes about her work for Amazon and the exhaustion and alienation associated with it.

In a live performance, artist Mark Bain brings visitors of the Trinkpavillon into physical resonance with the vibrations of the building. To do this, he uses sound waves that can be heard and physically felt. Bain transmits the pavilion's own vibrations using seismic sensors that can register the smallest vibrations. This turns the drinking pavilion into a walk-in musical instrument.

INTRODUCTION BY MARYNA MAKARENKO TO ›WHEN YOU WHISTLE, IT MAKES AIR COME OUT‹
Singing, breatharianism or nervous system regulation: the performance and video artist Maryna Makarenko repeatedly deals with breathing in her work. In her INTRODUCTION, breathing becomes a means of approaching Ana Torfs' video work WHEN YOU WHISTLE, IT MAKES AIR COME OUT. Torfs' installation, whose rhythm is determined by the sound of her breath, is based on Swiss psychologist Piaget's studies on children's ideas of cause and effect. The children's surprising answers to questions such as “Where does the wind come from?” appear as lettering in an old light box. Bilingual.
Ticket opening day 2 required; seats subject to availability: lists for the INTRODUCTIONS will be displayed at the Videonale kiosk from 11:00.
In guided situations, the INTRODUCTIONS offer approaches to artworks of the VIDEONALE.20. The aim of the INTRODUCTIONS is to intensify the holistic perception of video art through various approaches (e.g. physical, linguistic, textual, via sound/music). The new Videonale format was created in collaboration with the dancer and choreographer Anja Bornşek. You can choose between three INTRODUCTIONS.

INTRODUCTION BY ELSA ARTMANN TO ›A PORTRAIT‹
In A PORTRAIT, eight queer performers step into the spotlight of a large stage one after the other. The conventional separation between character and persona is dissolved and the performers embody what Maggie Nelson calls »the flickering, bewildered places that people actually inhabit«. The INTRODUCTION by Elsa Artmann offers the opportunity to engage with the inside and outside of oneself in preparation for the video.
