Jan Verbeek &

Continuum

Jan Verbeek is known for his experimental works in video and media art. In Continuum, his video work from 1991, he occupies himself intensively with the themes of time, space, movement and perception.

The video begins in silence, which is abruptly replaced by the sound of the escalator starting – a rhythmic clacking sound, and black and white, regular and intensifying lines and patterns appear in the frame. After several minutes, an organic handrail in counter motion, accompanied by squeaking sounds, interrupts the previously steady soundtrack. Through the images, Verbeek evokes associations with a living being, and the everyday means of transport increasingly gives the impression of a creature in agony.

Continuum is characteristic for Verbeek’s approach to video technology and his exploration of the relationship between media and human perception. It is a study of movement, rhythm, sound and image – a montage of visual and acoustic elements that connects different levels of perception. The seemingly endless, continuous repetitions prompt viewers to question their perception of time and space. At the same time, the work challenges traditional conceptions of linear narrative structure. Continuum thus becomes an immersive experience that encourages us to reflect on the relationship of time, perception and technology. (Anne Diestelkamp)
